R. Scott Anderson

R. Scott Anderson is an artist based in Independence, Missouri. He focuses on creating self-described sensual, healthy, and empowered images highlighting the nude form. In addition to nude photography, he creates abstract paintings, sketches in graphite, and digital abstract creations.

Anderson grew up in Independence, Missouri—part of the Kansas City metro area. He received a high school education and completed some college credit in Fire Science and Emergency Medicine. In 2000, with no previous art or photographic education, he began shooting as a self-taught photographer. Prior to pursuing a photography career, he was a professional firefighter for thirty-two years.

While a firefighter, R. Scott Anderson experienced death, destruction, sickness, and injury. Experiencing such dark occurrences, he decided to explore more positive emotions in his art. Now, through his images, he examines themes revolving around health, passion, happiness, sensuality, and life affirmation. Furthermore, he focuses on the healthy self-empowerment of women through his nude images. Additionally, he believes that the narrative is the most important aspect and that a photo should have a positive message.

The nude art genre provides R. Scott Anderson a timeless and universal canvas. It allows him to capture any time, place, or situation without the constraints or the implications of clothing. His creative process consists of envisioning a concept and setting parameters to define his new art series. He then proceeds to explore various ways in which to create and develop his images within his idea. For example, his Vintage Vertical series originated from him focusing only on vertically oriented shots using a single source lighting and adding a vintage edit effect afterward. Another example is when he shot underwater and produced his Below series—one of his most physically demanding photographic shoots for both the model and photographer.

R. Scott Anderson favors shooting with natural lighting or in a set-up that forces him to adapt to the environment. Furthermore, he likes to challenge his creativity and artistic vision by using interesting arrangements, such as using a projector to give off hyper-sharp light, using the dim light of a fire, or even shooting through pieces of faceted glass to create warped refractions. Additionally, he usually captures his images employing a handheld method. His preferred equipment includes a Canon Full Frame cameras and L series lenses. He also uses Photoshop and the NIK filter set for editing during the post-production stage.

In the future, Anderson hopes to have a photo shoot in space, more specifically in a zero-gravity environment. One of his dream projects is to produce an image that showcases a model floating with the planet earth as the background. Though this type of image is possible through digital techniques, he would prefer to achieve it without relying on computer-generated imagery or CGI.

Some of R. Scott Anderson’s accomplishments include being honored as the Featured Photographer at several modeling conventions and being the artist in residence at the VALA Gallery. Furthermore, his work exhibited in solo exhibitions in various galleries around the Kansas City and in various group exhibitions. Most notably, his images exhibited twice at the Hilliard Gallery’s Annual Human Form show. Aside from exhibitions, his work published on the covers and featured in several publications such as Wide Open Magazine and Next Level Magazine. Additionally, his art printed in eight album covers and extend album art. He also created still images for nine political campaigns and fourteen advertisement campaigns.

R. Scott Anderson strives to create art that will impact future generations through his perceived concepts of beauty.
